Pietro BONATO (Bassano 1765 - 1825ca) "the Holy Family" (Our Lady of the Basket) Original etching dating from 1811 according to the repertoires, from a subject by Antonio Allegri called Correggio (Correggio 1489ca - March 1534), printed and published in Rome by Pietro and Giovanni Balla Samonati print shopkeepers in via dei Canestrari without date. Beautiful specimen produced from a still perfect and carefully inked plate, complete with the imprint of the plate and with very small margins, applied to the four corners on a sheet of thick eighteenth-century laid paper bearing some red pencil markings, with some spots at the corners due oxidation of the glue but overall in a good state of conservation. An identical specimen to ours is present in the collections of the British Museum in London. The phrase engraved on the bottom left tells us that “The original exists in the Sigr Tom collection. Maria Celoni in Rome "and may suggest, as advanced by Meyer, that Bonato engraved a copy of Correggio's painting whose original, a small oil on canvas of 34 x 25 cm made around 1525 is now preserved in the National Gallery of London .. Pungileoni in describing the painting says: "The elegance of the heads, the tenderness of the action, the very pleasant landscape, the well-woven basket, from which it takes the name of Madonna della cesta, containing scissors and various linen, has several degrees of perfection, which before him sat hidden beyond art ..
